The pain of the past can scar you. And sometimes…that mark is real. It was his mother’s birthday on a Sunday in September when Sun Zulu was born. He carries a scar on his forehead; the results of a painful incident at the age of 3. This traumatic event pushed him into the role of an “outcast” early…fortunately, it was the vibrant sounds and culture of Hip Hop that eased Sun’s pain. He received a love of music from his family and often heard songs from groups such as the Wu Tang Clan, Gang Starr & A Tribe Called Quest growing up thanks to his brother, Bishop Tha DJ.

It wasn't until the age of nine that he began to write his own rhymes. Inspired by a 4th grade book report on the “Long Walk to Freedom” by Nelson Mandela, Sun wondered what it would be like to create his own story. After being asked by a teacher to rap what he wrote in front of the class, his own creative spark began to burn brighter. But the uncertainty of life and personal tragedies almost took Sun to the brink of destruction.

Finding himself in Chicago in 2012, he realized his path was similar to other young people. "How do you succeed when the world casts you with a negative role?" Citing this as his moment of awakening, He returned to Baltimore and began work on a personal, music-centered journey to help others. It’s a journey that has taken him all around the world and is one that you can hear expressed vividly in Sun Zulu’s beats and rhymes. The story being told? A passionate redemption from pain.
