Sun Zulu x Mydus - Asrah

“What is your identity? Can you define yourself in one word? And why does it matter?”

Enter: Asrah. A journey to discover one’s identity by Baltimore-bred lyricist Sun Zulu & Miami-based beat-smith Mydus. Growing up, both creatives felt the constraints of society loosen by escaping through the sounds of Hip Hop. Sun found strength in the Zulu identity and began to reflect it in his everyday life - eventually receiving an opportunity to go to South Africa to explore the Zulu identity.

It's during this process that Sun slowly realizes that things aren’t always what they seem to be. As he fights to discover the truth between the American and South African Zulu, he leaves behind a record of his findings - through the help of Mydus’ golden touch - should anything happen. These records are the album, Asrah.

“They say Asrah is a type of illusion in magic that simulates levitation. The appearance of floating in air, to me, symbolically represents my search to discover the American link to the Zulu through Hip Hop. You have to suspend your belief in order to free your mind and you’ll find the ‘why’. These are the lessons I learned on that journey to understand why (I am who I am).” - Sun Zulu
